Press Release
I wrote this press release promoting Teju Adisa-Farrar’s blog series about the gentrification of Oakland.
Teju Adisa-Farrar Releases New Blog Series About the Gentrification of Oakland
Teju-Adisa-Farrar, a writer, poet and geographer based in Oakland, California, released the first post of a new blog series focusing on the gentrification of Oakland last Wednesday. The first post details how gentrification shouldn’t just be seen as a social issue; it’s an environmental issue as well.
On viewing gentrification as an environmental issue, Adisa-Farrar says “As we continue to talk about a just transition as it pertains to climate and environmental justice, we need to seriously consider the effects of urban environmental issues such as gentrification. Although gentrification is not normally seen as an environmental issue, its pervasiveness is a result of some of the same systems that contributed to creating the climate crises. If we are going to truly have a just transition then we have to understand all the inequitable structures that create the crises we are in, and gentrification is undoubtedly one of the consequences of these unjust economic and environmental structures.”
Adisa-Farrar details the environmental problems that result from gentrification throughout the duration of her first post. She says that increased construction and hasty development is a big problem for the environment, as building construction accounts for more than 30% of the world’s carbon emissions. Construction can often take place on unsuitable or unstable land, and those that work to make the land suitable for living often aren’t treated to the results of their work.
Adisa-Farrar says that mass displacement and homelessness are big environmental issues caused by gentrification as well. This displacement causes the homeless to use spaces that aren’t meant for living as spaces that are meant for living become increasingly unoccupied as they are unaffordable. Continuous growth and expansion of communities depletes the Earth’s limited resources, and increases in commuting to work aren’t good for the environment.
She goes on to detail how social tension and community insecurity are also problems caused by gentrification, saying that it can change the landscape and demographic of a city to make it almost unrecognizable from what it was previously. It puts citizens’ feelings of community and safety at risk, and new tenants don’t want much to do with those that have been in Oakland before them.
On why she has chosen to begin the series, Adisa-Farrar says that she was born and raised in Oakland. She feels that gentrification has caused her identity to be disrupted and spaces to be usurped and appropriated by others. She wants to take the privilege and resources that she has to further educate the public about the issue. Much of her work centers around political, racial, and environmental justice, and encourages people to think about space, place, and identity.
At the end of her first post, Adisa-Farrar encourages people who have seen or been through gentrification to reach out to her. She wants the series to be a collaboration of experiences that will make readers think about the severity of the issue not just on a social level, but a political and environmental level. If you would like to contact her to share your story, you can do so here.

10 Tips for Law Firms Thinking About Launching a Podcast
It’s no secret that in order for a law firm to really stand out amongst its competition, its employees are going to have to think outside the box. Creating a podcast is a creative way to show off your firm’s expertise, give it a voice, and reach your desired audience with a different form of content. As with any new form of content, there are some basics that you’ll need to know before you get started in order to get the most success you can. Here are some tips you can use to take your podcast to the top.
1. Be Realistic About Time
You may think creating a podcast is a relatively simple process. While it certainly can be, you’ll need to pay attention to how much time it all takes up. Law firms thinking about launching a podcast will have to do prep work as well as recording, editing, and posting it onto the necessary channels. These processes can eat up more time than you think, so be mindful about how long it takes to do each step.
2. Make a Consistent Publishing Schedule
In order to build up a consistent audience, law firms will need to create episodes on a regular basis. Create a schedule that your firm can realistically follow; whether that be one episode per week or one per month. Try posting on the same day of the week, as this will tell your audience when to expect new podcasts.
3. Do Trial Runs
Your first episode is definitely not going to be perfect. It may be best to do some test podcasts to make sure the audio quality, format, style, and personality is the best that your firm can make it before an official release. Plan on launching with around 3 to 5 finished episodes. Your firm’s exposure on iTunes may be larger if you release multiple episodes the first time around.
4. Invest in Quality Microphones
Let’s be honest; nobody is going to want to listen to a podcast with bad audio quality. A quick Google search should tell you which microphones have the best quality, and these types are the ones that your firm should use.
5. Be Prepared to Edit
A raw podcast audio file is definitely going to have a few wrinkles, whether they be moments of silence or people talking over one another. Your firm will want to edit these out to create a good, consistent flow throughout the episode. Adding intro and outro themes will also up your podcast’s production value. You should plan for the time it takes to edit in your schedule.
6. Research on iTunes
iTunes has one of the largest audiences for podcast listeners amongst audio streaming platforms. A quick visit to Apple Help will give you some good tips on how to get your firm’s podcast there. Knowing how to get the podcast to iTunes before you begin the process will greatly benefit your firm in the long run.
7. Be Passionate About Your Topic
Nobody will want to listen to people discussing a topic if it’s clear that none of those people are interested in it. Passion and enthusiasm about your topic, which will likely be related to your firm’s specialties, will be more likely to attract your desired audience. This should be relatively easy to do for law firms, considering their employees wouldn’t be there if they weren’t interested in their practices!
8. Promote Your Podcast Often
Don’t assume that people will flock to your podcast automatically upon uploading it. Your firm will need to put in some effort to drive listeners to each episode. Advertise each episode like you would advertise your firm regularly. Promoting it on your firm’s social media pages is one of the best ways to attract the desired audience.
9. Create a Webpage for the Podcast
This is a hugely helpful way to promote your firm’s podcast! You’ll want to create a webpage for it, whether it be an add-on to your firm’s website or a separate website entirely. This will make it easy for listeners to find and view each episode. As is true about your firm’s main website, you’ll want to have a strong design for it and make sure it’s SEO optimized. This will ensure that more people will view the webpage.
10. Make a Plan for Each Episode
If you go into a podcast episode cold-turkey, it may be difficult to get a consistent flow going. You’ll want to plan extensively for each episode; make sure you have talking points ready to go before you start recording. Plan out each episode on paper and make specific steps to ensure that each episode is the best quality your law firm can produce!
The best podcasts are started by people who know what they’re doing before they ever pick up a microphone. If your firm follows these tips, they’ll have a much easier time making their online presence known!

Elderberry Drops: Benefits and Risks
The world of natural remedies is constantly changing, bringing new markets of products to the forefront of peoples’ minds. Elderberry drops are another recent natural remedy. They come from the berries grown on the European elder tree, and people use them to help alleviate flu and cold symptoms. They might sound enticing now, but as with any product, you should learn more about it before you decide if it’s best for you. Elderberry drops have their benefits, but there’s also a great deal of risks that come with them!
Benefits
Elderberry drops seem to work best for those people combatting the flu, as they’re meant to boost the functions of our immune systems. While they aren’t exactly a “cure-all” for the affliction, they can work wonders on decreasing the amount of time the flu lasts for. It works similar to the Tamiflu medication in that it helps relieve flu symptoms and decreases how long it lasts.
Because the drops are newer to medical tests, the other benefits of elderberry drops aren’t as concrete as you might think. According to WebMD, elderberry drops may also be helpful in curbing constipation. The research for this is still ongoing, however, so keep that in mind before you decide to use them here.
Elderberry drops aren’t just useful for curbing illness, either; they can also provide a variety of health benefits. For example, elderberries are very high in nutrients, specifically Vitamin C. If you don’t feel like eating an orange, why not add some elderberry drops to your tea? They can potentially be good for your heart’s health too, as they can improve the blood sugar levels in your body. Not only that, but they may also potentially be helpful in fighting cancer cells! Elderberry drops need more testing to truly confirm this, however.
Risks
Elderberry drops don’t just need more testing to confirm their effectiveness against cancer; they need more testing in general! A lot of the greater risks of taking elderberry drops come from the fact that we don’t know everything about them yet. This includes those people who would be ill affected if they take them. If you’re someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, a child, or someone with an autoimmune disease, you should consult with your doctor before you decide to take elderberry drops.
While elderberry drops are supposed to increase immune system functions, they may also decrease the effectiveness of other medications if they’re taken with them. If you take a medication that is meant to decrease immune system functionality, there’s a good chance that they’ll negatively affect the medicine’s ability to do its job. This isn’t to say that elderberry drops will negatively affect every medication, but there are some medications you shouldn’t be using the drops on.
If you’re wondering what other illnesses elderberry drops would help you fight, don’t expect to get a definitive answer anytime soon. WebMD states that there is insufficient evidence that elderberries are affective against a lot of other conditions. In fact, a lot of early research is showing the opposite: for heart disease, taking the drops daily for 12 weeks showed no reduction in risk factors for the disease in postmenopausal women. In another study, elderberry drops were found to be ineffective in reducing high cholesterol when taken three times per day for two weeks. While it may reduce common cold symptoms, it does not prevent the illness from developing. More research needs to be done to confirm the level (or lack) of effectiveness for headaches, nerve pain, toothache, obesity, and hay fever amongst other things.
One thing is for sure, though: the biggest risk of taking elderberry drops is how much is unproven about them. Keep that in mind before you buy!
Conclusion
Elderberry drops are a bit of a mystery in terms of their proven effectiveness. While they are effective in slowing cold and flu symptoms, there’s so much more that we don’t know about them yet. This can make them a bit of a double-edged sword in the world of remedies, but that doesn’t make them completely ineffective. Just make sure to consult with your doctor and consider the unknown factor before you buy!
